Variety was the first to report the announcement that under the Fox 2000 label, James Mangold has signed on to direct an untitled Patty Hearst movie about an heiress hostage turned leftwing radical bank robber. The film will not share the book's title, but it will draw on Toobin's reporting as it delves into Hearst's kidnapping by the Symbionese Liberation Army and re-emergence as a member of the left-wing terrorist group.
For those of you who do not know the story of Patty Hearst, in 1974 the heiress was 19 and in college when she was kidnapped by a left-wing terrorist group in California called the Symbionese Liberation Army (read the group's manifesto here).
Mangold wrote the script with Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander, and he'll also produce alongside Nina Jacobsen and Brad Simpson of Color Force, who worked with Karaszewski and Alexander on FX's The People vs. O.J. Simpson.

Back in September, a rival project titled American Woman was announced, with Downsizing's Hong Chau in talks to play the woman who took care of kidnapped newspaper heiress Hearst. Soon she was participating in armed bank robberies, and after her capture Hearst became the center of a dramatic trial.
One only assumes that the script for Girl With a Gun is incredible, as Mangold could've picked any project he wanted to follow up Logan with (due to its box office now standing at $616 million worldwide). Fox is aggressively pushing the film for awards consideration. Her upcoming credits include "Mary Shelley" and "I Think We're Alone Now".
