A masked Palestinian takes part in a protest against U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip December 7, 2017.

"We condemn the decision of U.S. administration, which would put the region and even the world on the brink of a new conflict", Xinhua quoted Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim Al-Jafari as saying.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari summoned the U.S. ambassador in the country to protest the shift, while powerful Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, who heads his own militia, demanded the closure of the American embassy in Baghdad and warned that "we can reach Israel through Syria".

"The U.S. administration has to backtrack on this decision to stop any unsafe escalation that would fuel extremism and create conditions favourable to terrorism", it said.
