Trump order on sanctuary cities permanently blocked by federal judge

Trump issued the order in January, shortly after he was inaugurated, slashing funding to jurisdictions that refuse to comply with a statute that requires local governments to share information with USA immigration authorities.

A federal court judge in California on Monday blocked an executive order from President Donald Trump to deny some federal grants to so-called sanctuary cities, undermining the administration's crackdown on illegal immigration.

Trump issued the order which slashed funding to local governments that refused share information about illegal immigrants with US immigration authorities in January. The term "sanctuary city" has come to describe a jurisdiction that won't allow local law enforcement to hold someone in custody on behalf of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

"The defendants are permanently enjoined from enforcing Section 9 (a) of the Executive Order against jurisdictions they deem as sanctuary jurisdictions".

Orrick made his April decision permanent on Monday. The president can not set new conditions on funding already approved by Congress, the judge said.

Real Madrid not giving up on De Gea
De Gea has been in exceptional form once again this season - keeping eight clean sheets in 12 Premier League games this season. He is expected to retain his place in goal for United's Champions League fixture against Basel.

The injunction comes after Orrick issued a temporary ruling in late April that blocked Trump's directive to withhold some federal funding from cities that refuse to comply fully with immigration enforcement, siding with San Francisco and Santa Clara County.

San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera said the ruling was "a victory for the American people and the rule of law". Visit MarketWatch.com for more information on this news. However, the federal judge said the order potentially endangered hundreds of millions of dollars in funding to the two California counties.

He cited comments by the president and Attorney General Jeff Sessions as evidence that the order was meant to target a wide array of federal funding.

Chicago also sued the federal government in August over the threats of funding cuts by the Justice Department.
