Snooping aid? Brit spy agencies fear anti-virus software Kaspersky's Russian Federation links

An investigation by The Times found that at least four forces in England were using antivirus software from Kaspersky Lab, which security experts suspect could be used by agents of the FSB and SVR, Russia's domestic and overseas intelligence agencies.

The Financial Times newspaper earlier wrote that the British Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) was concerned over cooperation between Barclays Bank and Kaspersky Lab.

The decision was a sharp response to what US intelligence agencies have described as a national security threat posed by Russian Federation in cyberspace, including allegations that Moscow attempted to influence last year's USA presidential election through cyberattacks and leaks.

Kaspersky Lab has repeatedly denied the allegations, and Moscow has denied that it sought to interfere in the 2016 presidential election. Moscow has denied any interference in the 2016 USA presidential election.

Trump's September order required civilian agencies to identify any use of Kaspersky products within 30 days and to discontinue their use within 90 days.

She said the lawyers have told her the directive was legal, but she also mentioned the possibility that Kaspersky could file a lawsuit against the government over the ban.

Asked if the company is considering suing the USA government, a spokeswoman for Kaspersky said the company "continues to consider all possible options".

Moscow-based Kaspersky is one of the world's most successful computer security companies.

Kaspersky Lab was deemed a potential USA national security threat in September, and now most government agencies have determined whether the company could have access to their systems.

Barclays said in a statement it had not been alerted to any concerns, "We have never received any advice or guidance from GCHQ or the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) in relation to Kaspersky".

At a Senate intelligence committee hearing in May, top USA officials were asked whether they would be comfortable with Kaspersky software on their computers.

Manfra said such a step, while welcomed, would "not be sufficient" to address concerns the USA government has about Kaspersky Lab.
