Rear-facing 3D sensor could feature in 2019 iPhones

Iphone X

Apparently, the tech giant wants to introduce a 3D sensor to the back of the device that year. The infamous notch of the iPhone X houses an infrared dot projector that beams 30,000 dots onto a user's face, while another sensor reads these beams and creates a data-based 3D map that allows it to identify faces. A new report from Bloomberg claims Apple is already developing a new "3D sensor system" for the 2019 iPhone to further improve its augmented reality capabilities. Since the testing of the technology is still in early stages, it could end up not being used in the final version of the phone, says a new Bloomberg report.

This would be an entirely new technology that's completely different from the TrueDepth camera system that's now on the front notch of the iPhone X. The TrueDepth sensor system uses 30,000 infrared laser dots to map out a user's face to accurately generate a 3D image. Talking about the technology behind the existing system, the TrueDepth sensor basically depends on a structured-light technique.

Currently, the 3D sensor (TrueDepth camera) is placed on the front of the device and is used to unlock the iPhone through facial recognition.

The 2019 iPhone is said to retain the TrueDepth camera system on the front, and add a rear-facing 3D sensor into the mix, that together should make it an all the more powerful AR-ready machine.

Apple is reportedly working on another groundbreaking upgrade on its camera sensors for 2019's iPhones. Infineon stands out from the pack since it has already worked with Google for the AR-centric Project Tango back in 2014.

Apple's iPhone X Lineup Will Continue To Grow In 2018
What's your take on this? The upcoming iPhone models will not face limited supply issues which is seen in the existing iPhone X . There are anecdotal reports of those who have already ordered an iPhone X receiving their handsets much sooner than anticipated.

This will take the firm closer to making the smartphone into a leading augmented reality (AR) device, people familiar with the matter said to Bloomberg. It's not that great at depth perception and can't deal with vertical plans such as walls, windows, and doors.

What Are The Laser-Based 3D Sensors For? The current tech available via ARKit can place digital objects onto real-world settings, as long as there's a flat surface around.

The sources said that Apple has begun discussions with potential suppliers of the new system.

The next generation of Apple Inc.'s iPhone will have lasers - literally, at least according to a newly published report.
