Qatar emir says his country 'thousand times better off' without Gulf allies

Boycotting Arab nations don't want to negotiate Qatari Emir

Sheikh Tamim says "their goal was not to reach a solution or settlement".

The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, said yesterday that Doha will hold Shura Council elections for the first time in its history very soon.

Qatar's emir said Tuesday his country was "a thousand times better off" without Saudi Arabia and the UAE, months into a dispute between the neighbors and former allies.

Earlier in June the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt announced the severance of diplomatic ties with Qatar and imposed a de facto blockade against the country, citing Doha's alleged support of Islamist extremist groups as a reason.

The emir also said the blockading countries had underestimated the strength of Qatar's people living under the blockade.

Sheikh Tamim said that Qatar has been "following a policy of self-restraint" during the crisis and that "the blockading countries have not been able to convince the worldwide community about their allegations against Qatar".

"Qatar's record on fighting terrorism is documented and known to everyone", he said, adding that Qatar has joined worldwide and regional treaties in this regard, mainly the "UN global Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism" in 1999, and has contributed to every worldwide and regional effort in this regard.
