Parents mortified by American high school 'penises' mascot name

Petition works to change Utah high school mascot that sounds like male anatomy

Parents in Farmington are petitioning to change the name of a new high school mascot out of concern that when their children cheer from the sidelines it will sound like they're shouting about male anatomy.

Recently the school announced their decision for the school's mascot: the Phoenix. Everything was fine and well until a group of parents practised their updated chants for the sports team. A Utah dad is demanding a local high school change its "inappropriate" mascot - not because of the mascot itself, but because the name sounds ever-so-slightly similar to the word "penis".

This prompted Kyle Fraughton to launch a petition asking the school board to change the mascot, reports KSL.

Fraughton started a petition to change the name, writing, "We were horrified to hear that the phonetics of the word Phoenices are far too close to the word penises". As happened to my neighbors and me, high school kids will take a quick trip to Google or WordHippo to learn that Phoenices is a plural form of the word.

"We don't see anything about the plural version of phoenix having anything to do what's going to be happening at the school or on the football field", said Williams.

"With his scenario playing out, there will be a never ending barrage of references to male anatomy directed at our children as they participate in any kind of sports against other schools", he said. He pleads for the school distract to change the "well-intentioned, but potentially unsafe choice". That will just be the beginning as it doesn't take much imagination to figure out how vulgar this could get.

Farmington High School in Utah isn't scheduled to open until the fall of 2018.

Indian man declares unclaimed 2000 sq km area in Africa his 'kingdom'
Earlier in 2014, an American had travelled to the desert land to make his daughter a princess of the "Kingdom of North Sudan". After making the announcement of "Kingdom of Dikshit", Suyash has made his father Prime Minister, President and Military Head.

Fraughton asked the school to have students vote to pick a new name that isn't a "potentially risky choice". But the school already has a mascot, the Phoenix.

More than 2,600 people so far have signed the petition supporting a name change. We are already being referred to as the Phoenices.

The concerned resident reached out to representatives from the Davis School District and the high school's administrators, but after lengthy talks, he said his concerns were dismissed.

All of us are invested in protecting our kids, especially when they're at school.

"We plead with you to consider a mascot change toward something more in line with our wonderful community, and away from this well intentioned, but potentially risky choice", he said.

"We do use the mascots in their plural form but just saying phoenix even sounds unbelievable", said Burgoyne.
