Myanmar army investigation a 'whitewash'

Rohingya Muslims risk lives to cross border

On Monday, Suu Kyi said at the summit with her Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) counterparts that she was willing to receive global aid for the Rohingya and is prepared to begin the process of repatriation of the over 614,000 members of the minority group who have fled to Bangladesh after violence erupted late August in Rakhine state.

"I don't know the reason why he was transferred", Major General Aye Lwinhe told Reuters as a United Nations official accused the military of conducting organized rape and other crimes against humanity.

In a statement issued late Monday, the military said it had interviewed thousands of people during a month-long investigation into the conduct of troops in western Rakhine state after Rohingya insurgents launched a series of deadly attacks there on August 25. The investigators' findings were posted on the Facebook page of the military's commander-in-chief, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.

It said it had found no instances where its soldiers had shot and killed Rohingya villagers, raped women or tortured prisoners.

The report stated that almost 376 "terrorists" were killed in fighting during the August attacks.

The Myanmar military said its own internal investigation had exonerated security forces of all accusations of atrocities.

"There is overwhelming evidence that the military has murdered and raped Rohingya and burned their villages to the ground", the group said.

"After recording countless stories of horror and using satellite analysis to track the growing devastation we can only reach one conclusion: these attacks amount to crimes against humanity", James Gomez said.

Myanmar authorities gave Bangladesh a list with the names of 1,000 people deemed terrorists during a six-day conference on security and law enforcement between the Myanmar Police Force and Border Guard Bangladesh, which began on Monday in Myanmar's capital Naypyidaw.

Aung San Suu Kyi later met Tillerson briefly, though the two will have a one-on-one conversation on Wednesday in Naypyidaw to discuss the situation in northern Rakhine and the restoration of peace and stability.

Meanwhile, on Friday, the commanding officer in Rakhine State, Major General Maung Maung Soe was replaced.

"We remain gravely concerned by continuing reports of violence and human rights abuses committed by Burmese security forces and vigilantes".

"She has said what she will do, and ASEAN must make comments on Myanmar only after waiting and seeing what she does", he said.
