Greggs has apologised for replacing baby Jesus with a sausage roll

The advent calendar is available in selected shops in the United Kingdom and behind each door is a voucher for one of its treats.

Greggs has apologised after publicity shots for its new ad campaign included a nativity scene in which baby Jesus is replaced by a sausage roll.

Each door on the calendar reveals a token which can be redeemed inside one of Greggs' 1,700 or so outlets in the UK.

A Greggs spokeswoman told The Northern Echo: 'We're really sorry to have caused any offence, this was never our intention'.

Nevertheless, thicker-skinned sausage roll lovers will still be able to get their hands on the advent calendar from November 20, which Greggs has said is worth between £35 and £60.

Comedian Bob Mortimer, who lives in Tunbridge Wells, tweeted: "Come on KFC.show Greggs the way. put a miniature Jesus in all your Christmas buckets".
