Global Terrorism Index 2017

Global Terrorism Index 2017 produced by Australia's Institute for Economics and Peace

"There was a 22% decrease to 25,673 deaths [in 2016] compared to the peak of terror activity in 2014 when over 32,500 people were killed", the IEP said in a statement.

In Europe and other developed countries, it was the deadliest year for terrorism since 1988, excluding the September 11 attacks in 2001, according to the GTI.

Still, as the total number of terrorism-related deaths has decreased in the last two years, the number of countries experiencing terrorism-related deaths increased in 2016. "The qualifier is that the number of deaths in OECD countries is climbing and spreading".

The number of deaths and attacks caused by terrorists decreased past year compared to 2015, according to the Global Terrorism Index 2017, but trends suggest violence will continue. Yemen, Somalia, India, Turkey, and Libya rounded out the top 10 countries in the index. But deaths attributed to the Islamic State (IS) terror group increased by almost half in 2016, with the majority of the rise ─ 40 percent ─ in Iraq.

Mr Hyslop added: "The reality is that as the group is being defeated, I think you will see fewer deaths in the places where the majority of deaths occur".

Globally, attacks against civilians rose 17% between 2015 and 2016. "There's been 82 deaths from terrorism in OECD countries and there were 260 for the full year of 2016, so by raw count of deaths, there have been fewer deaths".

As per the data, she then worked as a professor of English in Gujarat, on a temporary basis. However, the difference between male and female judges in India is huge.

Since 2014, attacks against nontraditional targets with unconventional tactics have grown more common in OECD countries.

ISIS, Boko Haram, Al Qaeda, and the Taliban were the four deadliest terrorist groups in 2016, accounting for 59% of deaths.

Despite the fall, Iraq bore the brunt of an increase in deaths primarily driven by Isis, which stepped up its suicide attacks on civilians to compensate for its territorial losses. There's no guarantee that the group's recent battlefield defeats in Syria and Iraq would reduce the number of attacks, Hyslop said.

The report said improvements in counterterrorism strategies have led to more attacks being foiled than in previous years.

The Global Terrorism Index - which defines terrorism as "the threatened or actual use of illegal force and violence by a non-state actor to attain a political, economic, religious, or social goal through fear, coercion, or intimidation" - analyzes the impact of terrorism in 163 countries and covers 99.7% of the world's population.
