Chef Lyon stops play for 30 minutes

Nathan Lyon of the Blues

A week before the Ashes starts, Australia Test spinner Nathan Lyon caused play to be halted for 30 minutes in a Sheffield Shield match after his attempt at making a snack went wrong.

With New South Wales cruising the victory at Brisbane's Allan Border Field, the Australia off-spinner knew it was highly unlikely that he would be needed to bat and chose to treat himself to a slice of toast. Usman Khawaja and David Warner, among others, were perplexed at the proceedings.

Following the alarm, the Stuart Law Stand, which houses both teams, the scorers and the media was evacuated as two fire tenders arrived at the ground.

After the threat was examined, umpires allowed players to resume play.

It was Lyon's actions that caused the "mishap", as he confessed he was "getting a bit bored in the changerooms", after play resumed.

He told cricket.com.au he got a bit distracted watching the game, and forgot to keep his eyes on the toaster.

"It happens every second week [at home], I reckon".

The match also saw Matt Renshaw's poor form continue - the Middlesbrough-born opener making scores of 16 and one - but Lyon says his worldwide team-mate retains support from within the dressing room.

New Zealand's Test against South Africa last March was halted for around 15 minutes when an emergency alarm at Dunedin's University Oval enforced a full venue evacuation.

New South Wales were batting and were within sight of a three-day victory when a fire alarm went off.
