Apple was accused of "data colonization" in August earlier this year by the Chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), R.S. Sharma. According to a new report, Apple has given in to India's demands and will now offer limited help to the government for the development of an anti-spam app for iPhones.
"The option was submitted to Trai about a week or 10 days back", the source said.
The pesky call or "Do not disturb" application developed by Trai makes it easy for consumers to file complaint regarding unsolicited commercial or promotional calls and SMS by just selecting the call from their call log in the phone or SMS from inbox.
The TRAI has been able to access this information - with user consent - on Android, which allowed it to develop an app for users to report spam calls and text messages.
Apple's executives have told India that its current iOS platform might not allow for some of the government's requests, such as making call logs available within the app that would allow users to report them as spam, the official said.
Sources at Trai, however, denied to have received any concrete or final word from Apple.

The Indian government launched an anti-spam app called Do Not Disturb back in 2016. The government tried to roll it out for iOS as well, but Apple reportedly refused to play nice over privacy concerns.
Apple has been trying to fight this off since a year ago.
It appears that the Cupertino firm has now proposed to work with the TRAI's technical staff to develop an app for iOS that could meet the TRAI's requirements, but with limited capabilities as to ensure its commitment to user privacy and security. "They've had meetings, meetings and meetings".
