Former head of Brazilian Olympics committee charged

The former president of Brazil's Olympic Committee (COB) Carlos Arthur Nuzman has been charged with corruption.

Despite the authorization to leave Benfica prison, in Rio De Janeiro, Nuzman will be required to comply with provisional measures, such as having his passport confiscated and appearing in court to report his activities on a monthly basis.

Nuzman has been under arrest since the 5th.

According to her vote, Maria Thereza, justice reporting on the case, emphasized that the judge responsible for the proceeding may determine "if other measures are applicable (.), including a new detention order, if required".

The former COB director, who was provisionally suspended by the International Olympic Committee and arrested on October 5, continues to deny the charges. Sergio Cabral, former governor Brazil's Rio de Janeiro state, was sentenced [JURIST report] to 14 years and two months in June for corruption and money laundering in connection to the Olympics. Nuzman has denied any wrongdoing, and says he has been unjustly implicated in the scandal.

After his arrest, Nuzman resigned from his position as COB President, where he was serving his sixth consecutive term. In a letter to the committee he said he needed to devote himself to his legal defense and would not be returning.

A former Olympic volleyball player, Nuzman had been commanding the Committee since 1995, being at the helm of the organisation of both the 2016 Olympics and the 2007 Pan-American Games.
