Uber set to appeal London license loss

No quick win for Uber in London over license loss

Uber has until Friday to formally appeal the London transportation authority's decision not to review its license to operate in the city, which could cost the popular ride-sharing company millions of local customers.

The appeal hearing is likely to be on December 11, according to a spokesperson for the United Kingdom judiciary office.

"I think we are very conscious of the fact that 40,000 people do earn money through Uber in London".

Mr Byrne said Uber's technology enables the company to "be far more helpful in holding people to account with police investigations than a traditional private hire operator or taxi company".

Last month, regulators Transport for London (TLF) failed to renew Uber's license and gave the US firm until October 13 to appeal.

Uber will challenge the licence decision "with the knowledge that we must also change", he said.

London mayor Sadiq Khan said on Thursday that the appeal against regulator Transport for London "will take its course" during a City Hall question time session.

The committee meeting comes after TfL refused to renew Uber's licence on the grounds of "public safety and security implications" relating to issues such as the reporting of serious criminal offences.

Uber's new chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi met transport commissioner Mike Brown last week to discuss the firm's future in the capital. In an open letter after the ban, Khosrowshahi admitted that the company has "got things wrong along the way" and apologized for any mistakes. Uber has been trying to placate the regulators.

London is an extremely important market for Uber. It has been attempting to overturn a judgment that drivers - about 40,000 of whom work for Uber in London - have rights to paid holiday and the minimum wage. The company claims to have 40,000 drivers in the United Kingdom capital. An online petition against TFL's decision has garnered over 850,000 signatures.
