Merino makes Newcastle United move permanent

Newcastle United have made permanent the signing of midfielder Mikel Merino for £6.5million

Merino arrived at St James' Park on loan in July with a view to a full-time switch to England if he made a big impact.

Newcastle have completed the signing of midfielder Mikel Merino on a permanent basis for an undisclosed fee.

The Magpies have four winnable fixtures ahead of them and the news of a permanent deal for Merino will send a positive feel throughout the squad. "I'm happy to be here for five more years and I hope to keep playing for this club and to give good things to all the people and the club", he told NUFC TV.

The 21-year-old joined the newly-promoted Premier League side on a season-long loan deal from Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund in the summer.

"He has to keep working hard and playing well, and hopefully he can improve and enjoy playing here".

Merino was also in Spain's squad for their runners-up finish at the UEFA Under-21 Championships, though he started just one game in the tournament and briefly appeared as a substitute in one other.

Newcastle now sit ninth in the league and are looking a stronger unit than many expected, with Merino's calming influence in the middle of the park a key factor.
