Burnley forward Jonathan Walters out until Christmas

Jonathan Walters

Sky sources understand the Republic of Ireland worldwide will miss his nation's attempt to reach the World Cup finals in next month's play-off.

The former Ipswich man is now taking part in a rehab programme and will definitely miss Ireland's World Cup play-off matches next month.

According to reports, Walters will be out of action until at least Christmas.

Walters sat out his nation's crucial matches against Moldova and Wales and won't recover in time for the play-offs, which will be staged between November 9th and 11th with the return fixtures then taking place over the following three days.

Walters has only played 27 minutes of Premier League action for the Clarets since joining from Stoke in the summer and hasn't featured in any competition since 23rd August.

Ireland have to wait until Tuesday to learn their opponents for the play-off, as they will be drawn with one of Italy, Croatia, Denmark and Switzerland.
