Gardaí are investigating if a known criminal is linked to the disappearance of Trevor Deely, who has been missing for nearly 17 years.

Mr Deely vanished on December 8, 2000, when he was 22, after his office Christmas party.

They were also known to have been active in the area of south inner city Dublin where Mr Deely was last seen alive.

Mr Deely - originally from Co Kildare - went missing 17 years ago, and it is hoped the search will lead to a breakthrough in the case.

Gardai are now looking to identify a man who was seen outside Trevor's workplace on the night he disappeared.

However, he has never been found.

The search in a wooded area of Chapelizod is being carried out after new information came to light and it will take several weeks.

The search is, however, said to be unrelated to the footage.

A search of three acres of woodland in Chapelizod began yesterday after detectives received new information.

Detectives believe this was the same man captured on CCTV following Trevor along Haddington Road afterwards.

Detective Inspector Paul Costello said a perimeter had been set up with no public allowed access allowed.
