Charlottesville Car Attack New Video Shows Carnage, Force of Impact

Brennan Gilmore

Extremely graphic footage shows the moment a auto crashed into a crowd of protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia, killing a woman and injuring 19 other people.

"I thought that was a bit unusual", Mr Mahony (36) told CNN.

"We ran down towards the incident. because we saw everyone go flying, and then we saw the auto reverse back through the people it had already hit, and those people who were running into assist".

Video shot by bystanders showed the auto accelerating and smashing into the crowd and another vehicle and then rapidly reversing in an attempt to escape.

Dr Chris Mahony, a New Zealander living in Charlottesville, was walking back to the protest with a friend when he saw the attack unfold.

The auto reversing back through the packed crowd caused just as much chaos, as people went in to help those that were initially hit.

He immediately chased after the vehicle, shouting at police officers to stop it and to arrest the driver.

Pep Guardiola: Man City need to improve attacking to have title hopes
We put our bodies in, we made some important tackles and eventually we got the goal because we were patient. It's going to be a very tough opening game, but we have to play them at some stage.

Mahony said he was thinking, "This is clearly like a terrorist incident'".

In a different video, white nationalists were seen carrying flags and chanting "blood and soil" - a racist phrase made popular by the Nazis.

The clashes stemmed from plans to remove a statue of Robert E Lee in in Charlottesville, Virginia - a Confederate general who led pro-slavery forces during the American civil war.

Mr Mahony was among the counter demonstrators.

It wasn't a surprise, Mahoney added, as both sides of the protest "had a high level of antagonism".

"For people to walk around in military fatigues with semi-automatic weapons is very risky, so I wasn't unsurprised that there was an attack - I was just surprised that it wasn't someone starting to shoot as tensions grew".

He was sickened when he saw the auto crash into the crowd.
