Bruno Mars donates $1 million from concert to Flint water crisis

Bruno Mars has donated $1 million to the victims of the water crisis in Flint, Michigan.

The Grammy-winning singer made the announcement at a show last night.

The 31-year-old entertainer said in a statement that he was "very thankful" to his audience 'for joining [him] in supporting this cause, ' which remains a major issue in the community.

Elevated levels of lead, a neurotoxin, were detected in children, and 12 people died in a Legionnaires' disease outbreak that experts suspect was linked to the improperly-treated water. Ongoing challenges remain years later for Flint residents, and it is important that we do not forget our brothers and sisters affected by this disaster.

Flint's water crisis began in 2014 when it switched from Detroit's water system to the Flint River.

Bruno Mars is spreading a little 24K Magic around by taking the profits from his current tour and using them to fund - and inspire - some necessary change.

Mars' album "24K Magic" was released in November 2016 and has sold over 2 million copies. Due to insufficient water treatment, it was later found to contain risky levels of lead. Replacement of lead pipes is not expected to be completed until 2020.

After announcing the donation in concert, Mars told the Palace crowd, "This is why we love what we do".

Other celebrities, such as Eminem and Cher, have also made donations and supported Flint in the wake of the crisis.
