US Senate rejects latest attempt to repeal Obamacare

In the end, the senator voted against a bill that would have repealed the Affordable Care Act's individual and employer mandates, despised by Republicans, and against his party's seven-year campaign promise to dismantle President Barack Obama's signature legislative achievement.

This was the moment - a thumbs down by Republican Senator John McCain in the middle of the night that was a deciding blow for the latest round of repealing Obamacare in a 51 to 49 vote. Republican Senators Susan Collins from ME and Lisa Murkowski from Alaska had already declared that they would vote against the move, making Mr. McCain's vote decisive.

US Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) heads for the Senate Floor for a vote at the US Capitol.

He claimed the current checks and balances are making the Republicans "look like fools" and called on the party's Senate leader, Mitch McConnell, to scrap the "outdated" rule.

House Speaker Paul Ryan said in a statement that "cutting taxes for middle class families and fixing our broken tax code" is at the top of his list when Congress returns from its August recess. They also said it would receive a much better score from the Congressional Budget Office than previous solutions which would have eventually thrown millions of Americans off their health insurance, according to Politico.

Schumer called that approach "sabotage", and said he hopes Republicans in the House and Senate "will turn a deaf ear on that".

Among the ideas that Meadows is reportedly working with Senate Republicans on are amendments by Sen.

"If the Senate Democrats ever got the chance, they would switch to a 51 majority vote in first minute", Trump wrote.

The measure would have repealed the unpopular Affordable Care Act requiring most people to have health insurance or risk a fine from the IRS. "We're not going to raise the white flag and surrender", Georgia Rep. Barry Loudermilk said after the meeting. But on the crucial vote, a simple majority of 51 votes, including a tie-breaker by Vice President Mike Pence, was all that was needed.

The Republicans' "skinny" repeal bill, among other things, would have effectively ended the mandate that every American have to buy health insurance or pay a penalty, provided greater flexibility to the states through waivers, defunded Planned Parenthood and given more money to community health centers, and increased the contribution limit to Health Savings Accounts. "He is a war hero because he was captured", Trump said in a question-and-answer session in Iowa.

In response, Trump on Friday again suggested his administration would let the Obamacare program "implode". But abolishing the filibuster wouldn't have allowed Republicans to pass the proposed health care legislation, anyway.

Since they narrowly sunk the most recent bill, though, we believe it is incumbent upon the three to convince the Democrats with whom they voted about the importance of putting together an all-new bill.

"He urged we go back to the way laws should be made, with draft bills, hearings, meetings", Blumenthal said.
