Donald Trump intends to sign Russian Federation sanctions bill: White House

Russian sailors stand in attention as Russian President Vladimir Putin leaves after attending the military parade during the Navy Day celebration

Confronted by a united Congress and suspicions about his intentions towards the Russian leader, Trump had little choice but to sign the measure, whose passage the White House had opposed. By unilaterally imposing tough new sanctions that could hobble European business interests, Congress paradoxically seems more likely to unite Europeans against Washington than against Moscow-especially given the awful image President Trump has among European electorates.

The United States was told cut the number of diplomats and staff in Russian Federation to 455 and was also barred from using a Moscow summer house and storage facility.

Never in doubt was a cornerstone of the legislation that bars Trump from easing or waiving the additional penalties on Russian Federation unless Congress agrees.

Russian Federation announced that it was expelling American diplomats and seizing property after Congress passed the bill.

Russia had originally threatened the ouster of diplomats and seizure of property in December after the USA ordered 35 Russian envoys out of the US and seized two embassy compounds outside NY and Washington in protest of alleged Russian meddling in the election.

Some former officials said Russia could take other steps, such as seeking to help Russian-backed forces seize more ground in eastern Ukraine or to try to limit USA air operations in Syria, while others said any reaction might be more muted. "It's not good for any president - and most governors don't like to veto things that are going to be overridden".

"Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking ahead of the Senate vote, accused USA lawmakers of 'insolence' and promised retaliation if the sanctions become law", as NPR's Scott Neuman reported Thursday. Asked about a possible veto threat earlier in the week, Corker told reporters: "I don't think that's real".

Priebus gone, can Kelly bring discipline to the White House?
I wonder if Mooch, hoping/expecting that he'd succeed his nemesis Priebus, is angry that now he'll be answering to a general. Asked what he meant by including Priebus, Scaramucci said, "If Reince wants to explain he's not the leaker, he can do that".

"But two key differences here make the Russian Federation case exceptional: the unprecedented interference (which Trump is the only person in Washington incapable of acknowledging) in our election, and the Administration's constant stream of lies about its ties to Russian Federation, which raise legitimate questions about why they want a deal", Finer added.

"We waited so long, we thought it was sufficient time for decision makers in NY to change their minds, it didn't happen", he said, noting that "now we are equals".

Sanctions relief is important to Russia's broader objective of superpower status, shown by its bullish Syria policy.

Russians could strike out at the United States in any number of ways, continuing to target the U.S. diplomatic presence in Russia and USA properties there, and escalating its harassment of U.S. diplomats.

"Lawmakers are so distrustful of the administration that they are imposing requirements to conduct congressional review of attempts by the president to roll back sanctions, and in some instances prevent him from doing so", Rosenberg said.

Russian Federation could actively work against USA interests worldwide, Beebe suggested. "We will work closely with our friends and Allies to ensure our messages to Russia, Iran, and North Korea are clearly understood". Moscow has consistently denied the allegations.
