Israel will not remove metal detectors at Al-Aqsa mosque

Three Palestinians between the ages of 17 and 20 were shot dead, with the Palestinian Red Crescent reporting that 450 were injured in clashes in the West Bank and Jerusalem. A neighbour, an off-duty soldier, heard the screams, rushed to the home and opened fire, wounding the attacker.

Six people have been killed in the bloodiest spate of Israeli-Palestinian violence for years, following new Israeli security measures at the holiest site in Beit-ul-Moqaddas.

Israel says the detectors are necessary for security reasons following the killing of two of its police officers at the East Jerusalem compound last week.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas cut off all official contacts with Israel over the detectors, and the measures have been condemned by majority-Muslim countries.

Muslims are protesting new security measures at a sacred shrine.

In Jerusalem on Saturday, Israeli police said they used riot gear to disperse dozens of Palestinians who threw stones and bottles at them.

Palestinians have been refusing to enter the compound in protest at the metal detectors, and hundreds have been holding prayers outside, with clashes occasionally breaking out with Israeli police.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu held a phone conversation on Friday with his Palestinian counterpart Riyad al-Malki about the recent tension after Israel imposed restrictions on the Al-Aqsa compound.

He said he will suspend all official contacts with Israel until it removes metal detectors from Temple Mount.

"We are receiving from them an upto-date picture of the situation, as well as recommendations for action, and we will decide accordingly".

There have been clashes almost daily between Israeli police and protesters at the holy site, which is managed by a Jordanian trust but located on Israeli-administered territory.

Israel chose to install the metal detectors at the entry point to the shrine in Beit-ul-Muqaddas on Sunday, after the killing of two Israeli security forces on July 14.

But Israel's defence minister Avigdor Lieberman said it can live without security cooperation with the Palestinians.
